<abstract>Edward Wood was a marine biologist whose research included bacterial spoilage of fish; a survey of Australian seaweeds to find local sources for agar; bacterial activity in oceans and estuaries, and pioneering work on phytoplankton in Australian and New Zealand waters, particularly diatoms and dinoflagellates. Among his major publications were <span style="font-style:italic">Studies in microbial ecology of the Australasian region</span> (1964) and <span style="font-style:italic">Microbiology of oceans and estuaries</span> (1967).</abstract>
