After specialising in pathology at hospitals and research institutes in Adelaide and London, he was appointed foundation Professor of Pathology at the University of New South Wales in 1960. In addition he was responsible for the pathology departments at the Prince of Wales and Prince Henry Hospitals in Sydney, and consultant pathologist to several other hospitals. Wilhelm was a member of a number of advisory committees, including the Medical Advisory Research Committee of the National Health and Medical Research Council.
