In 1938 he joined the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories, ultimately becoming Deputy Director and Chief of the Research Division. North played a significant role in the large-scale manufacture of tetanus and smallpox vaccines during World War II. In his research he made major advances in developing vaccines for whooping cough and tuberculosis. North was a pioneer in the introduction of the triple antigen vaccine.
