Perth Zoo was originally founded by the Western Australian Acclimatisation Committee before management was transferred to the State Gardens Board in 1932, then the Zoological Parks Authority from 2001.

The Zoo first opened to the public in 1898 and by 1919 offered free veterinary classes to farmers as well as practical courses in anatomy and physiology.

Perth Zoo organises its research work into four inter-related programs - the Reproductive Biology Unit, Research Opportunities, Past Research Collaborations and Animal Ethics. In addition to research the Pert Zoo has an extensive Veterinary department that provides for the clinical care, nutrition and preventative health of the Zoos animals. The Veterinary department also works in the field of Conservation medicine and provides quarantine services.
