Much of his research focused on soil hydrology, crop growth modelling, crop-atmosphere interaction and the influence of management on soil erosion. His innovative textbooks Agricultural physics (1966) and An introduction to the environmental physics of soil, water and watersheds (2004) each ran to multiple editions. As foundation Professor of Environmental Studies at Griffith University he developed the first undergraduate and postgraduate environmental school in Australia, with an interdisciplinary focus. Rose was instrumental in the establishment of Griffith EcoCentre which hosts visits by over 10,000 school students each year.
