For 13 years he conducted surveys in many parts of the world for London-based geological consulting firms, during which time he developed pioneering and widely-used methodologies for integrating aeromagnetics with geology. In 1969 Boyd became Professor of Geophysics at the University of Adelaide. As President of the Geological Society of Australia he advocated a revival of geological mapping in Australia.
