She has also been a strong advocate for women as scientific researchers. In 2000 Sheil was appointed Professor of Chemistry at the University of Wollongong, the first woman to be appointed to such a role. In 2017 the Royal Australian Chemical Institute inaugurated the Margaret Sheil Leadership Award to recognise outstanding female leadership in a chemistry-related field.
