Upon Federation in 1901 the various colonial armies where merged under the Commonwealth Government of Australia, becoming the Commonwealth Military Forces. The first formal traces of a national military medical corps can be traced to 1902 shortly after the formation of the Commonwealth Military Forces. The Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC) became the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps (RAAMC) in 1948.
