Hugh Trumble was one of the outstanding neurosurgeons of his era in Melbourne being largely concerned with cerebral tumours and abscesses. Much of his surgery was ground-breaking, often utilising instruments and mechanical aids of his own invention. He was a world authority on sympathectomies. His publications ranged widely over surgery for tuberculosis, orthopaedics, intracranial tumours and the autonomic nervous system. From 1934 he led Australia's first neurosurgical unit at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, being formally appointed Neurosurgeon in 1946. Trumble was a founding member of the Society of Australasian Neurosurgeons in 1940.
