Pat McMahon was a wool technologist who pioneered the use of quantitative genetics in sheep breeding. At his Department at the University of New South Wales, he established a flock-testing service to assist sheep breeders to apply consistent genetic principles in their breeding programs. McMahon initiated research into the objective measurement of wool which had important implications for wool-selling and in the textile industry. He was actively involved in programs for the Food and Agricultural Organisation for which he visited many developing countries.
