He advocated a multi-disciplinary approach to therapy and rehabilitation, viewing the patient in a social and community context. As Professor at the University of Sydney, he made significant improvements to the curriculum, overseeing the implementation of a new 5-years medical degree, and became involved in the training of nurses. He co-authored the ground-breaking book Psychiatric nursing (1963, 5th edition 1982). Appointment as foundation Dean of Medicine at the University of Newcastle gave Maddison greater opportunity to reform the teaching of medicine.
