His research focused on pituitary and steroid hormones, and testosterone and related hormones: his research group was the first to demonstrate that testosterone was produced in many sites in the body. He was recognised as a world authority on androgen physiology. In 1962 Hudson was appointed to the foundation chair of medicine at Monash University. In this role he established a highly effective research department at Prince Henry's Hospital, Melbourne. In 1972 he became Associate Director of the Howard Florey Institute of Experimental Physiology and Medicine at the University of Melbourne. Hudson played a leading role in the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, serving on Council and various committees from 1957, and as President 1982 - 1984. He was prominent in the review of membership which resulted in the current examination, advanced training and accreditation system. The Bryan Hudson Clinical Endocrinology Award has been awarded by the Endocrine Society of Australia since 2004.
