Maurice Sando was an anaesthetist who saw that anaesthesia had a vital role to play in intensive medical treatment. As Director of Anaesthesia at the Royal Adelaide Hospital he developed his department's role to incorporate the specialty of intensive care. Sando played an active role in the governance of the Hospital and in professional organisations, particularly the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Medical Association, in both of which he held executive roles. In 1986 the inaugural Chair of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the University of Adelaide was named in his honour.
