As Director of Anaesthesia at the Royal Adelaide Hospital he developed his department's role to incorporate the specialty of intensive care. Sando played an active role in the governance of the Hospital and in professional organisations, particularly the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Medical Association, in both of which he held executive roles.
