A major focus of his research was the Precambrian banded iron formations in the Hamersley region, work for which he gained international recognition. He recognised the need for accurate geochronological data on these formations, establishing a joint research program between the Survey and John de Laeter at the Western Australian Institute of Technology. Trendall produced a series of landmark publications on Western Australian geology including Geology and mineral resources of Western Australia (1990). He was active in professional organisations holding executive office in the Geological Society of Australia and the Royal Society of Western Australia. In retirement he continued his geochronology research and his collaboration with de Laeter.
