His research had centred on the natural history and pathophysiology of peripheral neuropathic conditions, understanding CSF amino acids, neurotransmitters and drug metabolism in epilepsy, and developing screening protocols for impairments of higher mental function in children. He played a key role in establishing and leading the Institute for Neuromuscular Research at the Children's Hospital, Westmead, Sydney.
