Barrie Pittock has made significant contributions to Australian Society and the International Community in several ways. Between 1965 and his official retirement in 1999 Barrie Pittcock worked at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Aspendale Laboratory, a part of the Marine and Atmospheric Research division. In 1999 he became a CSIRO Honorary Fellow. In addition to this scientific work Barrie Pittock has been actively involved in Indigenous Land Rights activism and other social justice causes.
<p>Barrie Pittock's work at the Marine and Atmospheric Research Division included the measurement and study of the ozone, climate change, and the potential impact of smoke from nuclear war. He has published extensively on these topics and has served on multiple International panels on climate related issues. In 2007 he received a share in the Nobel Peace Prize for his role as a Principle Scientist on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.</p>
<p>Alongside his work on Climate Change Barrie Pittock is an active participant in Indigenous Rights. Beginning in the 1950s as an undergraduate student Barrie Pittock joined the ABSCHOL (Aboriginal Scholarship Scheme) at The University of Melbourne. He later travelled to the United States of America to complete postdoctoral work and with the intention of meeting with the American Indian Sociologist D'Arcy McNickle. He has been involved with the Council on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs (FCAATSI) and the National Tribal Council. As a member of the Legislative Reform Committee of FCAATSI Barrie Pittock played a fundamental role in the 1968 national land rights campaign and legal case.</p>
