Reyn Keats was a mathematician whose research interest was in signal detection, particularly detection of underwater signals using arrays of hydrophones, and computer applications for missile guidance. Much of his work at the Weapons Research Establishment was classified. In 1968 he was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the University of Newcastle. He revitalised the curriculum such the students had wide exposure to mathematics from a variety of perspectives, opening opportunities for employment in industry as well as academia. Among his achievements were the establishment of the Faculty of Mathematics in 1971 and the Summer Schools program for high school students. In retirement Keats increased his activity with the Australian Mathematical Society, of which he was a member, being for some time its Advisor on Public Relations.
