He over-wintered in 1973 and 1977, during which periods his research focus was on vitamin C. Between 1978 and 1996 he was Medical Officer on 20 Antarctic voyages. Gormly conducted much of the pre-departure training for both doctors and lay-staff, while his review of medical assessments allowed him to create a database on pre-existing conditions and their effects on health during expeditions.
