He was a world leader in experimental mathematics using intensive computation for pure mathematical discovery. After a career of 35 years in Canada, Borwein moved to Australia in 2009 to become Laureate Professor of Mathematics in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, University of Newcastle, and Director of the University's Centre for Computer-Assisted Mathematical Research and Applications. He was noted for his participation in professional organisations and policy and advisory bodies.
