George Frederick Humphrey is an Australian Oceanographer. He was the head of two divisions of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Fisheries and Oceanography (1956 - 1971) and the Marine Biochemistry Unit (1971-1977). He also served as the Chair of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) between 1973 and 1977. The IOC is a subset of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and according to its web page the IOC 'aims to improve the governance, management, institutional capacity, and decision-making process of its Member States with respect to marine resources and climate variability and to foster sustainable development of the marine environment, in particular in developing countries'. George was also involved in collaboration with the Royal Australian Navy undertaking sounding in the waters around Australia during the cold war between 1957 and 1963 with two river-class frigates, the HMAS Damantina and the HMAS Gascoyne. Both ships were used as survey and research ships after the Second World War.
