This research, begun at the Weapons Research Establishment and on secondment to the Royal Aircraft Establishment in England, was continued through his time at Monash University. In particular Troup worked on various forms of resonance, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron spin resonance (ESR), studies of metal ions in natural and synthetic minerals as possible laser materials, quantum electronics and photon counting. In 1964 he succeeded in building a gas laser at Monash.
