For 40 years he was associated with the (Royal) Perth Hospital, as well as holding senior positions at other Perth hospitals including the Repatriation General Hospital. He made several study trips to the United Kingdom and the U.S.A. in the 1920s and 1930s, as a result of which he introduced to Australia techniques and equipment such as cyclopropane, the Magill tube and the Foregger Midget portable anaesthesia machine. Troup was an early proponent of endotracheal intubation and the use of curare. He was a key contributor to anaesthetic literature in the inter-war period.
