Microbiologist Annabelle Duncan has made significant contributions to Australian science, higher education and international disarmament. Between 1999 and 2005 Annabelle Duncan served as the Chief of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Division of Molecular Science (mark I). Some of the projects she contributed to at this time were the microbiological production of an anti-cancer drug and the Chemical Discovery program. During her term as Chief at CSIRO the Federal Government routinely consulted her division regarding biological weapons. When the Gulf war broke out and concerns about biological weapons were raised Annabelle Duncan travelled to Iraq as the Australian Representative for a United Nations investigative team on multiple occasions. For her service to disarmament Annabelle Duncan received the Public Service Medal. During the more recent stage of her career Annabelle Duncan has served roles at a number of University based research institutions before becoming Vice Chancellor of the University of New England.
