From childhood he was a keen collector of Lepidoptera and Coleoptera, amassing a collection of over 75,000 specimens. These were mainly from Gippsland but augmented by exchanges with other collectors. In his endeavours Gooding was assisted by his wife Hilda and daughter Margaret Coulson.
