<abstract>Royston Brier was chief optician and director of Flavelle Brothers, the first firm of opticians in Brisbane. He was active in professional bodies, being office-bearer and twice President of the Institute of Ophthalmic Opticians of Queensland, and closely associated with the proposed establishment of a national professional body in 1918. Brier was heavily involved with efforts to secure the Opticians Act (1917) for Queensland.</abstract>
