Hamlyn Brier was an optometrist who, after serving an apprenticeship in Brisbane, qualified with a Diploma from Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, London, the first Australian to do so. While in private practice in Brisbane, Brier played a central role in professional organisations, serving as President of the Institute of Optometrists (Queensland) and the Australian Optimetrical Association, and being a founding member and office bearer of the Contact Lens Society of Australia. In 1939 he was instrumental in the inclusion of optometry in Section A of Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science. He was also heavily involved in the 1940s in attempts to have optometry included in proposed National Health Scheme. Brier was an early contact lens practitioner in Australia and involved in teaching at the Queensland Institute of Technology for over many years. The Hamlyn R. Brier Clinical Optometry Award for excellence in practice was established by he Queensland Division of the Australian Optimetrical Association in 1994.
