His research provided useful models for neuromuscular diseases in humans. He established a number of long-term collaborations with researchers in Australia and overseas. Howell was appointed inaugural Professor of Pathology in the Veterinary School at Murdoch University in 1974, and served the University as Dean of the School and as Pro Vice-Chancellor Research.
