He has made significant contributions to understandings of chronic diseases such as diabetes and the relationships between dietary constituents and human health. Head also played a central role in the establishment of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisations (CSIRO) Preventative Health National Flagship which he led from 2002 to 2012. Other achievements include the establishment of the Australian imaging Biomarkers and Lifestyle Flagship study of ageing.
