Bruce Morton made significant contributions to applied mathematics and geophysical fluid dynamics. His research focused on various fluid mechanics topics, including flow from smoke stacks, around bridges and aircraft, and around fires. He was particularly interested in the importance of vorticity in flows and its relevance to smoke rings, dust devils, water spouts, tornadoes and tropical cyclones. After completing his tertiary studies at the Universities of Auckland and Cambridge, he worked at the University of Manchester before becoming Professor of Applied Mathematics at Monash University in 1967. From this position he retired in 1991. Although he never considered himself a meteorologist, Morton was heavily involved in the activities of the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (AMOS) and its predecessor, the Royal Meteorological Society Australian Branch. The AMOS Medal, which has been awarded by the Society since 2000, is now known as the Morton Medal.
