The founding purpose of the Royal Society of Queensland according to its original rules is 'the furtherance of Natural Science and its application'. More recently its purposes have not been limited to the natural sciences and according to its website 'encourages scientific investigation and the application of science, especially as may be relevant to the State of Queensland, and seeks to improve communication among scientists and the community'. The Proceedings of theRoyal Society of Queensland have been published since 1885 in succession the the Philosophical Society's Transactions.

The Museum's parasite collection has a particular focus on parasitic worms (especially nematodes and trematodes) and protozoans of Australian animals. It incorporates several historically important collections, including those of the International Research Centre for Avian Haematazoa (IRCAH) (received 1985), the former School of Tropical Medicine and Public Health, Townsville (received 1987), and collections of noted parasitologists Thomas Cribb, Josephine Mackerras, John Pearson and John Sprent.
