Michael Coughlan has made significant contributions to Australian and global meteorology and climate science. Beginning his career as a trainee weather forecaster for the Australian Bureau of Meteorology Michael Coughlan went on to work on two of four World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) projects in the 1990s. He served as Program Manager for The Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) in the United States of America and as the Foundation Director of the International Climate and Ocean: Variability, Predictability and Change Project (CLIVAR) in Germany. In 1997 Michael Coughlan became Director of the World Climate Change Department with the World Meteorological Organisation in Geneva, Switzerland, before returning to Australia in 2003 to head the Australian National Climate Centre within the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. Coughlan was active in the Royal Meteorological Society Australian Branch, serving as Treasurer from 1983 to 1986.
