<abstract>Alex Murphy was a cardiologist and physician who in a long career associated with the Brisbane General and the Princess Alexandra Hospitals was renowned for his skill at diagnosis and teaching. Having been Lecturer in the School of Medicine at the University of Queensland he became the foundation Professor of Medicine in 1946. Murphy was active in professional associations, being President of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and holding executive positions in the Queensland Branch of the British and Australian Medical Associations. For some years he served on the Commonwealth Government's Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee.</abstract>
