Having been Lecturer in the School of Medicine at the University of Queensland he became the foundation Professor of Medicine in 1946. Murphy was active in professional associations, being President of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and holding executive positions in the Queensland Branch of the British and Australian Medical Associations.
