He was widely respected for his teaching in clinical medicine. Smith was a member of the Association of Physicians of Australasia and influential in the establishment of he Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He held executive roles in the College for nearly 20 years, including that of President 1946 - 1948. As inaugural treasurer he responsible for setting policy for the financial affairs of College and the management of College property.
