Alan Raw was renowned for his development of new cereal varieties suitable for Australian conditions. He used the genetic modification techniques prevalent at the time, including irradiation and the use of chemical mutagens, to produce successful varieties of wheat, oats and barley. He became the leading authority on barley in Australia. By 1964 his 'Research' variety of malting barley dominated the Victorian industry and was widely grown overseas. Raw's work led to the introduction of high-yielding wheats producing flour with good baking qualities. His research unit also worked on other crops such as linseed, tomatoes, onions, potatoes and tobacco.
