He made the first moves in Australia to establish cardiac catheterization and was in the forefront of the introduction into Australia of the use of anticoagulants such as heparin for the treatment of myocardial infarction. In this work Kay developed fruitful collaborations with researchers at the Baker Institute and the Alfred's cardiothoracic unit. From the 1950s Kay was involved in industrial preventive programs promoting low-fat diets, more exercise and the reduction of smoking. He played a leading role in the establishment of the National Heart Foundation and was Vice-President of the Victorian Branch for ten years.
