Douglas Parker was an orthopaedic surgeon regarded as a pioneer in the field in Australia. He was closely associated with the Royal Hobart Hospital and for over ten years was Director of Orthopaedic Services for the Department of Health, Tasmania. His interests included treatment and after-care for poliomyelitis patients and for tuberculosis patients. In 1964 Parker was President of the Australian Orthopaedic Association. From 1950 to 1972 he was a Member of the Council of the University of Tasmania, and strongly advocated the establishment of a medical school: the School opened in 1966.
