Lyndon Noakes was a geologist who was Director General of the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics for five years from 1974. His early career was as Assistant Geologist for the New Guinea Administration, for which undertook surveys in remote areas such as the Morobe and Sepik districts and Bougainville. With colleague N. Fisher he published the landmark <span style="font-style:italic">Geological Reports on New Britain</span> (1942). On joining the Commonwealth Mineral Resources Survey (later Bureau of Mineral Resources) Noakes was involved in mapping fieldwork of the Northern Territory. One of his significant achievements was the adoption of a suitable colour code for use in Australian geological maps. His contributions to geology on an international level include a term as British Commonwealth Geological Liaison Officer in London, and for the United Nations as special advisor on detrital mineral deposits (1967) and Chairman of the Technical Committee on Oceanography.
