Much of what is now known about the role of mosquito vectors and vertebrate hosts resulted from the work of Kay and his students. His research was particularly into the viruses that cause Murray Valley encephalitis, and the Ross River, Dengue and Barmah Forest fevers. Kay extended his work into active participation in local government and international mosquito control programs.
