Leonard Lindon was the first neurosurgeon appointed to South Australia's main teaching hospital, Royal Adelaide Hospital, and headed it's neurosurgical unit for 20 years. In his early career London practiced as a general surgeon. An extended tour of leading neurosurgical centres in Europe and North America 1929 - 1930 influenced him to specialise in neurosurgery. His concept of a modern neurological unit, including specialised theatre staff and a research component, was not wholly realised, but he laid the foundation for his successor to develop a state-wide, multidisciplinary head injury service. Lindon's principal interests were brain tumours, aneurysms, and head injuries and traumas. He readily adopted innovative techniques such as air ventriculography and encephalography, and was among the first in Australia to obtain X-rays of blood vessels in the brain. Lindon was a pioneer in intervertebral disc protrusion surgery and in 1945 performed Australia's first prefrontal leucotomy. He was active in professional organisations, serving as President of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and being a founding Member of the Society of Australasian Neurological Surgeons in 1940.
