His principal interests were in the geographic distribution of disease and particularly in cancer. Before coming to Australia he held a number of positions in the Netherlands and was Director of the Dutch East Indies Cancer Institute in Bandung, Java. After fine years at the University of Sydney, ten Seldam became foundation Professor of Pathology at the University of Western Australia and Head of the Department of Pathology at Royal; Perth Hospital. With these appointments he helped bridge the divide between experimental and diagnostic pathology.
