He started as a metallurgist doing research in the Company's flotation plant laboratory, and rose to hold senior management positions. For nearly 20 years he was General Manager. In this role he invested in exploration that revealed new ore bodies, ensuring the viability of the Company. Under Murray's direction metallurgical processes were improved and the inefficient Abt railway was replaced with road haulage.
