Elwyn Morey was "probably the best-known child psychologist in Australia". Her principal interests were in the cognitive development of infants and young children, and the adjustment of children and their families to disability. At the University of Western Australia she was instrumental in developing landmark postgraduate diploma courses in child, educational and clinical psychology. Moving to Victoria she continued to promote more enlightened attitudes in mental health, and advances in child psychology and parent education. Morey developed assessment techniques to determine the potential of disabled children. She was largely responsible for the foundation of Rossbourne House, Hawthorn, a school for slow-learning children, and the Monash Child Study Centre which was named after her. Morey served as Honorary Psychologist to many hospitals, societies and institutions.
