His research focused on the venom apparatus, mode of delivery, pharmacological properties and biochemistry of toxins. The principal subjects of his investigations were Conus species, the Box Jellyfish, stonefish and scorpionfish. With Italian colleagues he studied bioactive secretions from skin of Australian amphibians, which led to the isolation of caerulein. Other research was into ciguatera and paralytic shellfish poisoning.
