After several years in general dental practice in regional New South Wales, he moved to Sydney to specialise in oral surgery. While practicing privately he was also honorary dental surgeon and later Consultant at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Magnus conducted research on osteomyelitis of the mandible. He was active professional associations, holding several offices in the Australian Dental Association including that of President 1950 - 1951, and being President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Oral Surgeons in the 1960s.
