Gilbert Henderson was a dentist who for many years was Dean of the College of Dental Science in Perth, Western Australia. His particular expertise was in oral surgery and radiology. During WWII he served at the Military Hospital in Heidelberg, Victoria, where specialised in designing mechanical aids for repairing fractured facial bones, and fine prosthetic shields to restore soft tissue loss around the face. He was best known for building a prosthetic hand, activated by rods inserted in the arm muscles. Henderson resumed his role at the College of Dental Science after the war. Committed to community service, he was honorary oral surgeon to Royal Perth and Fremantle hospitals and to the Princess Margaret Hospital for Children. For many years Henderson was actively involved in the Western Australia Branch of the Australian Dental Association. The Faculty of Dental Science, University of Western Australia, established the Gilbert Henderson Prize in oral surgery and conferred on him a Doctorate of Dental Science.
