Friedrich Gunz was recognised internationally for his research on Leukaemia. He was particularly interested in its aetiology and chromosome abnormalities. In 1950 he moved to Christchurch, New Zealand, as haematologist for the North Canterbury Hospital Board. Here he set up a tumour research unit and later a cytogenetics unit of which he was Director. With colleagues he described the role of the abnormal Christchurch chromosome in lymphocytic leukaemia. While Research Fellow at the New England Medical Centre, Boston, he collaborated with William Dameshek in producing <span style="font-style:italic">Leukemia</span> (1958), a pioneering account of the origins of leukaemia, the manifestations of its various forms, and its treatment. In 1967 Gunz moved to Australia to become Director of Medical Research, Kanematsu Memorial Institute in Sydney. He played an active role in the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia, serving on several committees and editing its journal <span style="font-style:italic">Pathology</span> for eight years.
