Awarded the Irrawang Travelling Scholarship in 1919 he completed his PhD at Columbia University in 1921. Returning to Sydney he taught experimental psychology at the University of Sydney and had responsibility for setting up an experimental laboratory. Martin was a founding member and Secretary of the Australasian Association of Psychology and Philosophy.
