<biogHist>
Hubert Clements was an engineer who, by his mid-20s, had established an engineering company producing marine and land-based petrol engines and a motorcycle bearing his name. With the scarcity of car parts during WWI his workshop fabricated replacements, sometimes improving on the design of the originals. Shifting his attention to medical and anaesthesia apparatus, Clements designed and manufactured equipment including a portable suction machine which earned a reputation for its reliability. Other significant medical equipment designed by Clements includes breast pumps, centralised vacuum systems, and laboratory centrifuges used in blood banks throughout Australia. The Australian Society of Anaesthetists holds a collection of his apparatus.
