Gary Meyers was an oceanographer who made significant contributions to the understanding of climate systems and in the design of observation systems and networks. His research interests included baroclinic Rossby waves, the variability of the Indian Ocean and its relationship to El Niño Southern Oscillation, and the series of ocean currents draining the Pacific into the Indian Ocean. He collaborated in the development of expendable bathythermographs to measure the oceans' subsurface salinity and temperature. This allowed the generation of maps of oceans' physical conditions to predict extent of rainfall and examine links between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Meyers was the research leader of the ten-year Tropical Oceans-Global Atmosphere program (1985-1994). As Manager of the CSIRO Oceans and Climate Program (1997-2003) he worked with the Bureau of Meteorology and the Australian Navy to develop predictive models of Australia's seasonal climate and provide maps of temperature and salinity in oceans around Australia. Following his retirement from CSIRO, Meyers was the inaugural Director of the Australian Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) at the University of Tasmania.
