This program was replaced by the plasma ion immersion implementation group (PI3), the work of which gained an international reputation. PI3 systems were sold world-wide. Collins became ANSTO Director, Materials and Engineering Sciences Division. and later Chief of Research. As the head of the CAST CRC Collins pursued industrially-related research in light metals. In 2012 he became Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Development at Swinburne University in Melbourne. Collins served as President of Materials Australia, and on the executive of the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering.
