George Collins was a physicist and materials engineer who joined Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) in the plasma fusion program. This program was replaced by the plasma ion immersion implementation group (PI3), the work of which gained an international reputation. PI3 systems were sold world-wide. Collins became ANSTO Director, Materials and Engineering Sciences Division. and later Chief of Research. As the head of the CAST CRC Collins pursued industrially-related research in light metals. In 2012 he became Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Development at Swinburne University in Melbourne. Collins served as President of Materials Australia, and on the executive of the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering. He played key roles in forging closer links between ANSTO, CSIRO and DSTO, and in establishing the Defence Materials Technology Centre.
